Company Description
Colchester Zoo was first opened in 1963 under the management of Frank and Helen Farrah. It was originally known as Stanway Hall Park and commenced as a collection in the grounds of Stanway Hall, with just 25 acres of land and a small collection of exotic animals. The zoo was taken over by new management, the Tropeano family, in 1983, who invested in the zoo’s redevelopment and increased its size to 60 acres. In 2004, a charitable arm, Action for the Wild, was set up to support conservation projects around the globe; this charity changed its name to Colchester Zoological Society and took over the running of the zoo in February 2025. Colchester Zoological Society now holds over 150 species, many of which are part of international breeding programmes, looked after by a team of 80 keepers.
